Happy Mother’s Day!

Bonnie Parker (Bonnie & Clyde)Earlier this week we drew the name of our Mystery Lady contest winner (to catch you up: we posted a black & white photo of a “Mystery Lady” asking to guess her identity and they year the photo was taken, $50 www.ecolustre.com gift card as the prize for one randomly selected participant, original post here).  What does that have to do with Mother’s Day, you ask? Who Is The Mystery Lady?

Mother's Day Mystery LadyWhen we found this photo, we couldn’t resist doing something special with it.  So we’ve decided to use it on our website here, and to have a little contest. If you can guess the identity our Mystery Lady and the year the photo was taken, we’ll enter you for a chance to win some pretty nifty jewelry (a $50 Eco Lustre e-gift card, to be exact).  Entry form below.

Here are a few hints:

1- The lady is not a celebrity (though we think she’s pretty special).

2- The creators of EcoLustrous (the blog) and Eco Lustre (the website) are sisters.  They are huge fans of environmentally-friendly, handcrafted products, especially jewelry, Continue reading

Earth Day 2013: Eco Celebrations Top 10

earthday project A gorgeous day today, perfect for celebrating our planet! So many events & stories honoring Earth, big and small, that we decided to share a list.  It’s in no particular order, and we have no specific affiliations with any of the companies listed (except Eco Lustre, of course).  We hope you get to enjoy at least some, learn a little, save a little, help a little, add your own and pass it on!

Happy Earth Day!

Cozy Valentine: fireside lounging in eco style

Valentine's cozy fireplaceIt may be the frigid NYC temperatures this winter, but going out to celebrate Valentine’s day has no appeal to me at all. If you are in the mood, however, we put together two really pretty “going out” outfits for last year’s Valentine’s Day. Check them out here, they are still in (florals are big this winter), look fresh, and have options for every climate.

This year I’m into staying cozy at home, and craving an outfit equivalent of pajamas in comfort, but with a little more sex appeal. Fortunately, plenty of great options abound: I’ve Continue reading

Fair Fashion Runway

Love is mighty eco shoes

Love Is Mighty shoes from recycled biscuit wrappers

We happily follow Magnifeco, one of the premier eco-fashion and sustainable living blogs, on Twitter.  We are always grateful to be introduced to new sustainable brands and hear interesting tidbits about the designers we know and love.  So we were delighted to be invited to a Fair Fashion Runway event co-hosted by Magnifeco and the NYC Fair Trade Coalition, and held during the New York Fashion Week.

We promptly RSVP’d (and were glad we did since the event sold out), hopeful for something interesting.  And we were not disappointed!  We were treated to a runway show featuring Spring/Summer 2013 season of sustainable, fair trade fashion designers Continue reading

Eco-stylish Transitions: Summer into Fall With Accessories

We’ve loved it all: picnics, beach vacations, balmy weather (even when we complained of being unable to cool off, we were still happy that we didn’t have to warm up instead…), light, carefree clothes…  And while the warm weather should continue for a while longer, at least for us here in NYC, summer’s official end is looming just ahead.

Which brings me to accessories.  I’m a firm believer in the power of accessories any time of the year, but because end of summer/early fall are transitional both in mood and in weather conditions, accessories take center stage.  And yet Continue reading

Eco-Stylish Summer, Part 1: Bag It

It’s finally warm (yay! or boo! – depending on how much you love the 90+ degree weather).  Kids are out of school or just about, and everything feels festive in anticipation of fun trips, beach, outdoor time and cookouts.  All that fun does require just a bit of prep to be enjoyed in style and safety.  Which is why we thought a roundup of summer “stuff” – useful, cool, healthy, stylish, fun, and, of course, environmentally friendly, is a good way to kick it off. Conversations from the (virtual) stoop: Kris Nations

Kris & Kim NationsContinuing with our inspired “virtual stoop” interviews, we’re happy to introduce the newest addition to our jewelry designer lineup, Kris Nations.  There is much to love about the airy, modern creations produced as a collaboration between Kris and her sister Kim: the most appealing combination of organic and geometric, the almost universal practicality – both rings and bracelets are adjustable, which in no way detracts from the sophisticated sensibility…

Two of our personal favorite features of Kris Nations (the company and the product): their firm commitment to sustainability (all metals used are 100% recycled), and the real “wow” factor of the designs.  And it doesn’t hurt that it’s a company run by two sisters who credit their success to their collaboration – we can relate!

The Nations sisters hail from El Paso, TX, and currently call Oakland, CA home.  Kris, who started making jewelry as a teen, had a career as a web designer prior to making a full time commitment to jewelry design.  Continue reading

“Accessorize the Dress” Contest

Anthropologie dressThis post is a little different from our usual fare, which made it so much fun to put together!

Here is a quick background:  one of the bloggers we follow is Dana, who runs a lovely blog What the Frock? – primarily budget-friendly fashions with a keen sense of style, and a refreshingly non self-centered attitude.  A pleasure to read, I’ve written about her in a prior post. A few days ago Dana announced a contest to accessorize a cute Anthropologie dress you see here which she is planning on wearing to her sister’s wedding in Amsterdam in June.  Details on Dana’s blog if you care to know more.  Of course, we were up to the challenge, and the results are below.

Not particularly straightforward, as the dress has a complex pattern and color palette.  Since the neckline is high, and the pattern can either compete or overwhelm a piece of jewelry displayed against it, we focused jewelry on ears, fingers and wrists.  Overall, the key to success was selecting accessories that are interesting in their own right but in a primarily neutral palette with a single color accent.  So while the dress takes center stage, accessories still hold their own, albeit in a more subtle way.

We used Pinterest to gather materials in one place, which came in very handy.  The photos of each look are screenshots of Pinterest boards. Continue reading

Conversations from the stoop: eclectically stylish

Donna + one of her best accessoriesWe are back from a well-deserved hiatus with a new installment of Conversations From The Stoop (here is the prior installment featuring the jewelry designer Carrie Saxl). This time we are profiling a stylish jewelry wearer.  This profile will kick off our series exploring the role jewelry plays in a woman’s personal style.

Our first profile is Donna

A friend, fan, customer and Eco Lustre Adviser.  I had admired her interesting, never predictable jewelry choices before we were fortunate enough to have her as a customer. For this occasion, I asked Donna to select a few of her favorite pieces to model for us.  Here are the resulting photos and the interview:

EL: What type of style do you prefer in your clothing – for every day? for special occasions?
Donna: I prefer simple, comfortable layers in my everyday clothes – usually solid colors, drapey styles.  For special occasions I still aim for comfort but I am trying to incorporate more and brighter colors into my wardrobe.

EL: How does jewelry fit in when you get dressed?
Donna: Since my clothes tend to be very informal, I love to spark up what I’m wearing with a piece of jewelry that stands out – Eco Lustre’s Dahlia necklace ALWAYS gets noticed and I feel like it really improves whatever I’m wearing. Continue reading
